Painkillers

Most people suffer from headaches, muscle cramps and menstrual pains from time to time. For most people, the solution is simple: taking a painkiller. Unfortunately, up to 40% of the adult population are unable to take common painkillers, as they are not able to swallow their medication.

Alterola is ardently researching using its chewing gum formula for painkillers, both of the ordinary acetylsalicylic variety (Aspirin), as well as the medical agents used in migraine medicine.

Acetylsalicylic acid is both effective against headaches, muscle cramps and menstrual cramps, and it can also be used as a way to reduce fever and inflammation. Millions of people all over the world this medicine every day, saving themselves a lot of aggravating pain and sick-days.

Unfortunately, the taste of acetylsalicylic acid is so abhorrent that it effectively prevents people treating their pain. If left untreated, this pain can develop into a full-fledged migraine attack, incapacitating the sufferer for days, leading to impaired quality of life, and in worst case an inability to keep an ordinary job.

Alterola is researching a number of ways to mask the taste of acetylsalicylic acid so that it can be used in chewing gum. Besides simply overpowering the taste, Alterola is also looking for ways to mask it or make it resemble some other more appealing acidic taste, such as lemon or mint. Also, by using smaller doses released directly through the oral cavity, the otherwise intense taste is lessened, making it again more possible to use chewing gum as a delivery system for drugs using Acetylsalicylic acid.

A more potent combination of bringing both acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine together in one chewing gum will be readily available, making it possible to alleviate the pain from extreme headaches, migraines or muscle pains as well.
